Corrosion Challenges in Oilfield Gathering and Transportation Systems

Oilfield gathering and transportation pipelines are the "main arteries" of the crude oil production system, and their corrosion problems directly affect production safety and oil production efficiency. The corrosive medium in the oilfield environment is complex, and a typical oilfield gathering and transportation system faces:

  • ⚠️ CO₂ Corrosion: Dissolves in formation water to form carbonic acid, causing uniform corrosion and pitting corrosion. The corrosion rate under high partial pressure CO₂ conditions can exceed 3 mm/year
  • ⚠️ H₂S Corrosion: Synergizes with CO₂ to accelerate metal dissolution while inducing the risk of hydrogen bulging and sulfide stress corrosion cracking
  • ⚠️ High water content corrosion: Oil wells with water content >60%, formation water directly contacts the pipe wall, intensifying the corrosion rate
  • ⚠️ SRB bacterial corrosion: Sulfate-reducing bacteria are enriched in the stagnant water section, causing corrosion and perforation under the scale.

Recommended product: OEM anti-emulsification oilfield imidazoline corrosion inhibitor

Although ordinary oil-soluble imidazolines (such as BXH-102) have excellent corrosion inhibition properties, their use in oil fields with high water content can easily cause emulsification and increase the dehydration burden.OEM It is an anti-emulsifying oilfield corrosion inhibitor specially developed by Hubei Benxin for oilfield gathering and transportation conditions:

Frequently Asked Questions about Oilfield Corrosion Inhibitors

Q: What corrosion inhibitor is used to prevent corrosion in oilfield water injection wells?
The anti-corrosion of water injection wells needs to be selected based on the quality of the injected water (salinity, pH, CO₂/H₂S content).Generally, BXH-101 water-soluble imidazoline is recommended (dissolved in injection water, forms a protective film on pipe walls, inhibition efficiency ≥88%); for high H₂S in injection water, a composite formula with H₂S scavenger may be used. It is recommended to do a simulated water injection test before confirming the selection.
Q: What is the difference between oil-soluble and water-soluble imidazolines in oil fields?
Water-soluble imidazoline (BXH-101) dissolves in the injected water and preferentially forms a film at the water phase/metal interface, making it suitable for water injection systems; oil-soluble imidazoline (BXH-102 / OEM) dissolves in the oil phase and forms a film when transported with crude oil, making it more suitable for gathering and transportation trunk lines. In high-water-cut oilfield gathering and transportation pipeline networks, oil/water miscible phases exist at the same time. It is recommended to use OEM anti-emulsification type, which can form a protective layer at the interface of the two phases.
Q: Is imidazoline still effective in high-temperature and high-pressure oilfield environments?
In the oilfield underground (>150℃) environment, ordinary imidazoline has limited temperature resistance. It is recommended to use BXH-103 phosphorus-free high-temperature corrosion inhibitor (temperature resistance to 300℃) instead. For ground gathering and transportation pipelines (usually <80℃), OEM can be fully qualified. If the underground temperature exceeds 180°C, specific working conditions parameters need to be provided, and our technical team will conduct a special formula evaluation.
